Mind maps are brilliant for brainstorming! It can often help your students to jump start their writing. These are especially usful for primary students as they are just beginning to use writing to create stories or tell about their hobbies, etc. Mind maps are like the road maps for your thoughts.
Below is a link to Busy Teacher. This website has a great explanation of mind maps and how you can begin the process of creating a mind map. It has been very helpful for me! I also have an example of a mind map that you are free to use in order to help your students start creating their own mind maps. |

Free writing is essential to allow the students to be creative and begin putting many sentances together to form a story. I have used free writing with students from third grade through fifth grade. Some topics I have used are: Animals, Library, What I Did Yesterday (good to practice past tense verbs), etc. It is important to start small, maybe five sentances, and work your way up. If you are working on a grammar structure that is more difficult, make the students use it in their writing, or use the vocabulary. You be just as creative with the writing exercise as you want your students to be. Here is an example of a writing activity that I have used with my students.
